The Plan
A concept plan for a village center was one of the key factors in the selection of Linger Longer Communities' as the revitalization partner of the Jekyll Island Authority. The public-private effort aims to restore "Georgia's jewel" and establish Jekyll Island as the gateway island that welcomes visitors to the unique ecological and recreational opportunities on Georgia's coast. The plan features design principles that focus on environmentally-responsible design; integration of the entire island into a community; and celebration of the culture, history and the architectural heritage of Jekyll Island
Proposed changes to the infrastructure, new buildings and amenities are designed to enhance the island's natural systems and create an environmentally sound and sustainable coastal community. The internationally-renowned team of industry experts assembled by Linger Longer Communities wants the revitalization effort to result in a community that inspires environmentally sustainable coastal building along the Atlantic Coast.
In addition to the shopping, dining and lodging opportunities proposed by Linger Longer Communities, the plan also recommends formalizing the educational aspect of Jekyll Island. With recommendations for an Environmental Discovery Center, self-guided tours of the island's ecological heritage and long-term plans for a linear arboretum to educate visitors about the indigenous plant life, the plan seeks to enhance Jekyll Island's role in hands-on environmental education.
