Hankering for the iconic cars of the past

The motor car has been with us for over a hundred years now, and today’s vehicles are undoubtedly the most streamlined, fuel-efficient and technologically advanced there has ever been, but are they the coolest? Some say yes, but I for one would have to say no, because cars of the past seemed to have so much more glitz and glamour.

In the 1930s, car ownership was something that most people could only dream about, but those that were fortunate enough to buy a vehicle could choose from a variety of ultra-slick designs. And in those days, the motor vehicle was, well, big. Take a look at any gangster movie of the period and you’ll notice the average vehicle could hold a driver and several passengers.

Any colour you want…. Not!

And, no doubt to the delight of the great Henry Ford, most cars were black. Many of them featured running boards which would give today’s health and safety brigade a heart attack, and of course the ubiquitous spare wheel, with a white tyre attached, was fixed to the side of the front wing. Certainly nothing like the Renault lease vehicles that we see nowadays.

Skip forward a couple of decades now, and think about the car of the 1950s. I’m not talking about the little tin boxes that we were used to in Europe, but the larger, tailfin-sporting motors of mid-town America. While the USA is now a lucrative market for Japanese manufacturers, back then cars were big, boxy and strictly American only.

Riding around with the top down was a national pastime, especially for a younger generation which was enjoying a new-found sense of freedom and some very welcome affluence. Pulling into the parking lot of a diner for a burger and a soda pop is something we’ve all come to recognise from iconic movies such as Grease, American Graffiti and The Last Picture Show.

Much of a muchness

In later years, the design of cars seems to have become a lot more homogenised. In some cases, it’s difficult to tell some makes and models apart, and this worrying trend looks set to continue. Here in the UK, it seems every other vehicle is silver in colour and remarkably similar in design. Although you do get some fantastic vehicles like the Honda contract hire car!

Personally, I can appreciate the fact that vehicles are easy to maintain and far more reliable than in the past, but there’s a little piece of my heart that longs for the days when the release of a new car was looked on in much the same way as a piece of sculpture or an ambitious example of architecture.
